Dual Certification Guidelines

  1. Certified sends a written request to obtain a dual-certification application and the $40.00 application fee.
  2. Once the request is received, staff reviews current certification on file to determine any additional education hours, degree, exams needed to meet the requirements for the certification being applied for.
  3. Staff sends a letter stating necessary requirements along with the application and any other information necessary.
  4. Applicant sends completed application with all applicable documentation and the $150.00 certification fee.
  5. Once completed application is received, staff reviews and approves or sends written notification of any areas lacking appropriate documentation.
  6. Applicant may then schedule to sit for any exams needed to complete certification.
  7. Portfolio will be sent to the next available quarterly Board meeting for final approval, if material presented is questionable.
  8. Dual-certification will be issued once all requirements are met.

Dual-certification only occurs from professional level to professional level.

You must have completed certification at one of the professional levels before applying for a second certification.

Verification of work experience is waived as the requirements for certification at the professional levels is 6000 hours. (These hours have been met through prior certification).

Documentation of supervision hours is waived, as all professional levels require 300 hours of direct supervision by a qualified supervisor. (These hours have been met through prior certification).

Applicant must document any additional education hours where applicable for the certification they are seeking.

Applicant must take any exams when applicable. If Oral exam is required, a written case must be presented for approval to a Board meeting prior to sitting for the Oral exam.

Exception - those applying for the CAP credential may be exempt from taking the Oral exam if applicant has a Master's degree with a major emphasis in clinical counseling or a closely related counseling field, and has at least one supervised clinical practicum/ field experience in which clinical services were provided directly to clients. The degree must have been acquired through an accredited college or university. A written request to be exempt from the Orals must accompany this application.
You are not eligible for reciprocity without the Oral process.

Renewal - on June 30th of each year, the fee for each additional certification is $50.00.
